Catholicisms, history, and politics in the Americas in the 20th century: networks, conflicts, and transformations
Guest editors: Robson Gomes Filho (UEG), Yves Sólis Nicot (UAM Xochimilco)
Between the 19th and 20th centuries, the Americas underwent profound political and religious transformations, such as secularization processes, the expansion of the public sphere, dictatorships, liberal democracies, and new forms of political participation. In all these processes, Catholicism (as an institution, culture, political actor, and form of sociability) played a decisive role. From the constitutional debates of the 19th century to anti-clerical conflicts, the mass Catholic movements of the 20th century, the ecclesial reorganizations following the Second Vatican Council, and the political presence of Catholicism in 20th-century democracies, the Catholic Church and popular religiosity decisively influenced the public life of multiple American nations. However, a continental comparative perspective that examines the convergences and divergences between Catholic experiences in Latin American countries, articulating historical, political, and cultural analyses, is still lacking.
This dossier proposes to gather research analyzing the role of multiple Catholicisms in the historical, political, and social processes of the Americas in the 20th century. We seek contributions that comparatively examine national and transnational experiences, addressing themes such as secularization and the formation of the secular state, mass Catholic movements, authoritarianisms, religious economy, human rights and violence, the impact of the Second Vatican Council, contemporary political participation, the defended economic model, and expressions of popular religiosity. The goal is to illuminate continuities and ruptures, alliances and tensions, processes and stagnations in the relationship between Catholicism and politics in a 20th century that establishes state secularism as a constitutional principle. Our aim is to promote an interdisciplinary perspective, consistent with the mission of the Revista del CESLA and the possibilities of an original and creative approach to the religious problem in contemporary Latin American societies.
