The history of the construction of the interoceanic canal in Panama demonstrates how one of the greatest engineering achievements of the 20th century forever changed global trade routes. The difficulties related to the climate, tropical diseases, and technical challenges were enormous. Similar problems are currently being faced in the construction of the Nicaragua Canal, a serious competitor that may emerge. The Panama Canal is not only the lifeline of Panama but is also crucial to the security of the United States. The opening of a new canal in Nicaragua raises concerns, especially about the alteration of the balance of power in the region. A possible weakening of the United States’ position on the international stage would contribute to the strengthening of China. This potential scenario could worsen the already tense relations between the two powers.
