The Processes of Mediatization, Commercialization, and Politicization of Religion in Brazil

Guest editors: Joana Bahia (UERJ), Janine Targino (UERJ, UCAM), Joao Paulo de Paula Silveira (UEG)

Present-day Brazil has become a fertile ground for the study of religion in the public sphere, especially in the context of its commercialization, mediatization, and politicization, and the significant dialectical impact these processes have on the cultural, political, social, and even economic fields. The Brazilian "salvation sector" is becoming increasingly diversified and lucrative, fostering the perception of religion as just another commodity in the market of goods and services. The increased power of religious expansion on social media and other media, in particular, helps to successfully sell its offerings to consumers, establishing connections with the secular world, including the political one.

Mediatization transforms the internal logic of religious institutions, adapting rituals and messages to the formats and speed of digital communication, which facilitates penetration into new market niches and the construction of global religious brands. The commercialization, in turn, manifests itself in the proliferation of faith-based products, events, and services, where the promise of material prosperity and well-being is integrated into doctrine, reinforcing the consumerist character of religious experience. Simultaneously, the politicization of faith intensifies, with religious leaders acting as important electoral brokers, mobilizing their faithful around moral and conservative agendas. This intersection between pulpit and political platform not only influences election results but also shapes the legislative agenda and public policies, redefining the boundaries between the secular state and the religious sphere.

In this dossier, we will examine the tensions, discourses, alliances, reasons, actions, and strategies undertaken by various religious groups and leaders to promote their offerings and consolidate their position in the religious market and public space in Brazil, and the reciprocal interferences between religion, media, economy, and politics, with the processes of the commodification of religion.
